What is R22?
R22 is a refrigerant gas that was commonly used in air conditioning systems as part of the refrigeration cycle. R22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), a greenhouse gas, and is attributable to ozone depletion similarly to CFC’s.
Due to both international and EU regulation, R22 is undergoing a phasing out process. Production of air conditioning systems using R22 stopped in 2003. In 2010 the use of ‘virgin’ or new R22 was banned. Existing R22 systems may be serviced with reclaimed R22 gas until 1st January 2015. Feel free to contact us
How do I know if my system uses R22 refrigerant gas?
You should be able to tell by looking at the outdoor unit. There is usually a label that identifies which refrigerant gas is used in the system. Otherwise you can note down the model number of the outdoor unit and contact the manufacturer. You may also contact us with the model number and we will be happy to identify your system.
Do I need to replace my R22 air conditioning system?
Not necessarily, your R22 system may be in good working condition. However if your system breaks down and requires recharging you will need to take action. The closer to 1st January 2015 the more expensive reclaimed R22 gas is likely to become.
R422D and R417A are ozone friendly R22 replacement gases known as drop-in gases which can be used with existing R22 systems. However, replacing R22 gas with a drop-in gas may not be economically viable if your equipment is old and likely to fail. The use of drop-in gas is not generally advised by manufacturers.
If your R22 system is nearing the end of its designed product life span then you may need to look for alternatives. In most cases your existing R22 pipework may be used with new R410A indoor and outdoor units. In some cases a complete refurbishment may be necessary.
